“Hip Hop Shakespeare: Richard II Live” is an innovative live concept show produced by our Artistic Director “Akala” that will tour 6 cities in England to showcase emerging youth talent supported by a full live band and share the stage with renowned special guest hip hop/spoken word artists. Supported by Arts Council England, the Hip Hop Shakespeare: Richard II Live tour will also feature a series of Richard II-themed lyric-writing and performance workshops taking place at a local ‘Access To Music’ College prior to the live performances to engage young people aged 13-25 years old in order to develop emerging new talent across the country. Selected workshop participants will also be given the opportunity to take part in the live tour, gaining new opportunities to share the stage with professional artists.

“Hip Hop Shakespeare Live” performances aim to explore the social, cultural and linguistic parallel’s between the works of William Shakespeare and modern day hip hop artists through the fusion of live music, spoken word theatre and other art forms engaging audiences of all ages.

The Egg are dance technicians - playing live massive electronic, rock, funk and house inspired dance music, with video triggers, samples and live and vocoder vocals. Their music is influenced by everything around them and inspired by artists such as Pink Floyd, Daft Punk, DFA Records, Hot Chip, Morgan Geist and the nu-gaze scene.

The band are well known in the UK, and fit comfortably into the global EDM club scene and enjoyed a worldwide hit with the massive Electro House anthem ‘Walking Away’ remix by Tocadisco and the even bigger David Guetta bootleg ‘Love Don’t Let Me Go (Walking Away)’ that followed. The track went to No 3 in the UK and No 1 in France, Spain and Australia.

They have played throughout the world in Europe, USA, Australia and Brazil. In the USA they have been embraced by the US Jam Band Scene populated by bands such as Phish, Disco Biscuits and !!!, comfortably playing alongside the scene’s largest acts they impress audiences wherever they go.

Their new studio album ‘Something to Do’ is now released on their label Squarepeg Records. The 1st single was ‘Catch’ and features remixes from Psychemagik, The C-90’s and Tom Laroye (Paris). Their 2nd single is ‘In Your Pocket’ released early May 2013 with remixes by Tongue and Groove and Bristol’s White Bully. They have worked with or been remixed by: Tocadisco, Mylo, David Guetta, Rollo (Faithless), Fila Brazillia, Grand National, Dusty Kid, Ulrich Schnauss, Atomic Hooligan, Greg Hunter (The Orb) and then some….

The new album has been produced by Robin Twelftree (Tosca, Reverso 68), Benji Vaughan (producer of Forwards) & Bruno Ellingham (producer of New Order, Goldfrapp, Mertz.). The album has been mixed by James Reynolds (Tinie Tempah).

FESTIVAL INFORMATION

Hit The Deck takes place across four venues in Nottingham – Rock City, The Rescue Rooms, Steath, and the Forum – on Sunday April 21st 2013, and in Bristol at the O2 Academy, The Thekla, The Fleece and The Exchange, on Saturday April 20th 2013.

Wristband Exchange

You’ll be able to exchange your ticket for a festival wristband from 10am at Rock City in Nottingham and at The Thekla in Bristol. Hit The Deck starts at 12pm but we advise you to collect your wristband early to avoid long queuing times!

Please note: you will not be able to gain entry to other venues without having collected your wristband first.

Room Capacity

Each stage has a specific capacity and when this is reached entry to that stage will be limited, so if you are wanting to see a specific band please arrive early so you don’t miss out!

Underage Drinking

Hit The Deck operates a no tolerance policy on underage drinking. If anyone under the age of 18 is found drinking alcohol or attempting to purchase alcohol, or if anyone over the age of 18 is found to be obtaining alcohol for anyone underage they will be removed from the festival and have their wristband confiscated.

Meet English born and bred singer songwriter Ryan Keen. Hailing from South Devon, he picked up his first guitar on his 8th birthday and has never looked back. Combining emotionally driven lyrics, warm vocals and his rhythmic percussive style of guitar playing he truly stands out from the crowd.

Over the past two years Ryan has toured extensively around the UK building up his fan base. He has found himself part of an exciting circle of young musicians all carving a name out for themselves. He has played and toured with Lucy Rose, Ben Howard, Delilah, Emily & The Woods, Newton Faulkner and has toured twice with his friend Ed Sheeran.

Sam Bradley has been performing since the age of 17 and explains that, “When it came to choosing a career it was easy, as music is the thing I understand the best.” Heavily influence by country music due to his mother’s love for it, Sam also brings elements of folk, rock, and soul to his songs.

A fan of simple songs without pretension (e.g. Otis Redding’s ‘Try a Little Tenderness’), Sam has been singled out by critics for his infectious, powerful voice and honest, heartfelt, at times humorous songwriting.

Sam has recorded two EPs, released two singles and has contributed as a writer on the soundtrack for the movie Twilight. Born in London, one of Sam’s biggest desires has been to travel the world - music has made this possible, with his tours taking him to 49 U.S. States, Canada, Europe, the Caribbean, and South East Asia.

Based on folklore but filled to the brim with a modern kick, Keston Cobblers’ Club’s music is catchy, contemporary pop folk.

Siblings Matthew and Julia have gathered with school friends Tom, Harry and Bethan to revive the legacy of the old struggling Cobbler of Keston and his foot-stamping, shoe-scuffing music club. With beautiful harmonies, an oom-pah tuba line and a mish-mash of other instruments, the Cobblers give you music to tap along to!

Their debut album ‘One, For Words’ was released in August 2013 to critical acclaim and won widespread praise from BBC Radio 2 & 6 Music’s Bob Harris, Steve Lamacq and Simon Mayo amongst many other online blogs. Having recorded sessions for Burberry Acoustic, BBC Introducing and Daytrotter along with festival appearances at Bestival, Cambridge Folk and Wilderness amongst others, Keston Cobblers Club are ‘a band set for huge things’ (the 405 Single Of The Week).
